A footballer can earn in a week what a surgeon earns in years, and the comparison offends many people's sense of justice. My view is that the gap is not fair in any moral sense, but that it is the honest price of how markets and attention work, and the remedy lies in lifting essential professions rather than capping athletes. Judged by contribution, the imbalance is indefensible. Teachers build the minds of the next generation and doctors hold the line between families and grief, while an athlete, however brilliant, entertains. No serious measure of social value places a penalty kick above a safe delivery in a labour ward. But salaries are not prizes for virtue; they are shares of the money an activity generates. A single match is watched by hundreds of millions of people, and broadcasters, sponsors and clubs collect fortunes from that attention. The players are the product, their careers are short and their talent is almost impossibly rare, so enormous pay follows as arithmetic, not as a moral verdict. A teacher's value, by contrast, is spread across decades and is captured by society rather than sold by the minute to advertisers. The useful response, therefore, is not resentment of athletes but seriousness about essential work: pay scales, housing and prestige that let a nurse or teacher live with dignity, funded by the same societies that happily buy match tickets. In conclusion, the disparity is unfair as ethics and unremarkable as economics, and the fight worth having is over the floor beneath vital professions, not the ceiling above famous ones.
