Privacy Policy

What we collect, why, and the rights you hold over it, written to be read. Last updated 4 August 2026.

1. Who is responsible

Onterra Nigeria Limited (RC-918935), Lagos, Nigeria, is the data controller for Onterra Tutor and processes personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act and the NDPR. Questions and requests: info@onterra.ng.

2. What we collect

Account data: your email, first name, password (stored only as a strong one-way hash) and, if you choose, your target band, exam date, test track and WhatsApp number. Practice data: essays you submit, speaking recordings and their transcripts, quiz answers and band scores. Technical data: pages viewed (counted on our own server), a session cookie, and the campaign source that first brought you here. Payment data: references and amounts from our payment partners; card numbers never touch our servers.

3. Why we process it

To run the service you asked for: scoring your practice, keeping your streak and history, and signing you in. To communicate: verification codes, receipts, practice reminders and, only with your opt-in, WhatsApp check-ins. To improve the product using aggregate usage patterns. To meet legal obligations around payments and tax. We do not sell personal data, full stop.

4. Who touches your data

Trusted processors, each doing one job: hosting and infrastructure for the application and database; scoring providers that process your essays and recordings to produce band feedback; an email delivery provider for codes, receipts and reminders; payment processors for card payments; Google for optional Google sign-in and analytics; and Meta's WhatsApp Business platform if you opt into WhatsApp messages. Some processors run outside Nigeria; where they do, we rely on their contractual data protection commitments.

5. How long we keep it

Your account and practice history stay while your account is active. Speaking recordings are processed to produce your transcript and score, and are not kept afterwards; transcripts and essays are kept in your history so revision works. Payment records are kept as long as financial regulations require. Ask us to delete your account and we remove personal data that we are not legally required to keep.

6. Your rights

Under the NDPA and NDPR you can ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, and you can withdraw consent (like the WhatsApp opt-in) at any time without affecting the service you paid for. Email info@onterra.ng and we respond within 30 days. If you are unsatisfied, you may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

7. Cookies

We use a small set of cookies: your session, your theme choice, a practice-limit counter, and a first-touch campaign tag. Google Analytics sets its own cookies when enabled. We do not run third-party advertising cookies.

8. Children

Onterra Tutor is intended for users aged 16 and above, in line with the age IELTS itself is designed for. We do not knowingly collect data from younger children.
