Essay plan: opinion (agree or disagree)

When conservation budgets are announced, a familiar objection follows: people are hungry, so why are we buying radio collars for leopards? I disagree with redirecting wildlife funding to human needs, to a large extent, because the choice is largely false and the ecosystems behind endangered species are themselves human life support. The objection deserves a fair hearing. Poverty is urgent and visible, and to a parent who cannot pay school fees, money spent on animals can look like sentimentality wearing a lab coat. If conservation truly competed with famine relief for the same last dollar, humans should win. But that is not the real ledger. Conservation spending is a rounding error beside military budgets and fossil fuel subsidies, and the money is not thrown to the animals: it employs rangers, guides and researchers, very often in the rural communities where poverty is deepest. Kenya's and South Africa's wildlife economies feed hundreds of thousands of families through tourism that exists only because the animals do. Deeper still, endangered species are indicators of collapsing systems that people depend on: the forests that hold rainfall, the bees that pollinate harvests, the mangroves that shield coastal towns. Letting them go is not a saving but a loan against future disasters that will be billed to the same poor communities first. In conclusion, protecting endangered animals and protecting people are mostly the same project conducted on different timescales. I side with funding both, and reject the framing that asks the poor to choose between this year's meal and the systems that grow every meal after it.
