Essay plan: discussion (discuss both views)

When crime rises, the loudest demand is usually for longer prison terms. Others argue that education, rehabilitation and honest policing prevent more crime than any sentence length. Having considered both, I believe alternatives deserve the greater share of resources, with long sentences reserved for genuinely dangerous offenders. Supporters of harsher sentencing make a simple argument: a burglar behind bars cannot burgle, and the fear of a decade in prison should make the next burglar think twice. For violent and repeat offenders this logic holds, and no serious alternative proposes releasing them. Deterrence, however, assumes criminals calculate consequences calmly, which research on impulsive and desperate crime repeatedly contradicts. The alternative case starts from what actually fills prisons: poverty, addiction, illiteracy and unemployment. Countries that treat these causes get better results than countries that warehouse people. Norway's focus on education and work inside prison produces one of the world's lowest reoffending rates, while systems built purely on punishment release angrier, less employable people into the same streets. Drug courts, vocational training and youth programmes cost less per person than incarceration and return taxpayers a profit in crimes that never happen. In conclusion, both approaches have a role, but they are not equal. Long sentences protect the public from the dangerous few, while investment in prevention and rehabilitation shrinks the queue of people heading toward crime in the first place. A wise justice system spends most of its money before the crime, not after it.
