Ireland's Employment Permit routes (Critical Skills, General Employment and the rest) do not publish a single IELTS minimum for the permit itself. The employer's job offer is the practical test of your English, and for regulated professions the registration body sets a real, checkable number well before the permit stage.

What people miss
- Register with the professional body first where one exists: NMBI for nurses, the Medical Council for doctors. The permit follows registration, not the other way round.
- A general office, technical or trades permit usually has no test requirement at all; the employer judges your English at interview.
- Results for NMBI and the Medical Council must generally be from a test taken within two years of the application.
- The OET is accepted as an alternative by NMBI (grade B) and by the Medical Council, and some nurses find its clinical content more familiar than IELTS Academic.
