Australia's points-tested skilled visas (subclass 189 and 190) recognise three English levels, each set per skill, not overall. Competent English (6.0 in each skill) is the entry ticket; Proficient (7.0 each) adds 10 points; Superior (8.0 each) adds 20. What people miss
- The level is set by your weakest skill. Four 8.5s and one 7.5 is Proficient, not Superior.
- Skills assessment bodies (for engineers, accountants, nurses and teachers) often demand more than the visa minimum: check your assessing authority too.
- Test results are accepted for 3 years for these visas.
- State nomination (190) lists sometimes require Proficient English regardless of your points total.
