To register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through AHPRA you need IELTS Academic 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It is a per-skill bar with no rounding: 7.5, 7.5, 7.5 and 6.5 does not pass. The same standard applies to most other registered health professions in Australia, and it sits well above the skilled visa's own Competent English line of 6.0.

What people miss
- The Board's English language skills registration standard names the four skills separately, so one weak paper means rebooking even with a strong overall.
- Results must be from a test taken within two years of applying for registration.
- OET at grade B in all four sub-tests is accepted as the equivalent, and some nurses find its medical reading and listening more familiar than IELTS Academic passages.
- Register first, then the visa: without registration there is no positive skills assessment, and without that no points-tested invitation.

No. The standard is 7.0 in each of the four skills. A 6.5 in any one of them fails, unless a second sitting within six months makes up the difference under the two-sitting rule.
Is the Australian skilled visa's 6.0 enough for nursing?
