Metro Link: Your Guide to Travel Passes

Day pass. A day pass allows unlimited travel on all buses and trams from the time of purchase until 4.00 am the next morning. It costs 6 pounds for an adult and 3 pounds for a child aged five to fifteen. Children under five travel free with a paying adult. Day passes can be bought from drivers on buses, from machines at tram stops or through the Metro Link app. Tickets bought on board must be paid for by card, as drivers carry no change. Weekly pass. The weekly pass is valid for seven days from the first day you use it, and costs 24 pounds. It is only available through the app or at the main travel centre, and it cannot be bought on board. A weekly pass can be used on any vehicle, but it does not include the airport service, which has a separate fare. Monthly and annual passes. A monthly pass costs 80 pounds. An annual pass costs 800 pounds, which is the same as ten months of monthly passes, and it can be paid for in twelve instalments by direct debit. Employers in the city may offer to pay part of the cost, and staff should ask their personnel office. Annual pass holders also receive a card that gives a 25 per cent discount on rail journeys within the region. Student and senior discounts. Students aged 16 to 25 can buy any pass at a discount of one third on showing a valid student card. People aged 65 and over can apply for a free pass for off-peak travel, which is valid after 9.30 am on weekdays and at any time at weekends. Applications are made at the travel centre and require proof of age and a passport-sized photograph. Lost and stolen passes. Passes bought on a card are linked to a registered account and can be replaced, but paper passes cannot be refunded or replaced if they are lost. For that reason we recommend using the app for anything longer than a day. A receipt is emailed automatically when you pay through the app, and it can be shown to an inspector on request. Inspectors travel on all routes, and the penalty for travelling without a valid pass is 40 pounds. From the customer service manager. Every week I hear from people who tell me they did not realise there was a cheaper way to travel. In my opinion, we have not done enough to explain our passes clearly, and I regret that our website has been confusing. For most regular passengers a weekly pass is far better value than paying for single journeys, and I would encourage anyone who travels more than four days a week to try the monthly pass as well. We are rewriting our pages with this in mind.
