Every IELTS Speaking Part 1 question on work and studies, with a band 8 model answer for each one and notes on why it scores. Part 1 answers run 2 to 4 sentences, the length a real answer holds to.
What do you do - do you work or are you a student?
I'm actually a student at the moment, studying mechanical engineering at a university back home. I chose it partly because I've always liked taking things apart to see how they work, and partly because the job market for engineers has stayed fairly strong even when other sectors slow down.
Why did you choose this job or subject?
Honestly, it came down to a mix of interest and practicality. My uncle is an engineer and used to let me help him fix small appliances as a kid, so the interest was already there, but I also looked at graduate employment figures before I committed to it.
What do you enjoy most about a typical day?
Probably the practical sessions, when we actually get to build or test something rather than just sit through a lecture. There's a real sense of achievement when a design you sketched on paper survives a stress test in the lab.
Is there anything you would like to change about it?
I'd like a bit more contact with industry while we're still studying, to be honest. Right now most of our work is theoretical until final year, and I think an earlier placement would make the later modules click into place faster.
Why these answers earn band 8

Timing
Aim for 10 to 20 seconds per answer, about the length above. A one-word answer loses marks for underdevelopment; a 45-second answer eats time the examiner needs for the next question.

The uncle, the placement gap and the stress test are invented for the model, and that is fine in the real test too: the examiner is marking your English, not fact-checking your biography.
