Your 2-minute structure

  1. Open with a direct answer (10 seconds). Name your choice immediately: one sentence that answers "describe a piece of art that has had an impact on you. you should say: - what the piece of art is - who created it - where you saw it - and explain why it had an impact on you". Do not waste your first 20 seconds on "that's an interesting question".

Sample band 8+ answer

About 90 seconds when spoken at a natural pace. Notice how specific the details are; that specificity is what you should copy, not the story itself.

One piece of art that really impacted me is a painting called "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh. I first saw it a few years ago at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. I remember walking into the gallery and being drawn in by the vibrant swirls of color and the emotional intensity of the sky. It's such a famous piece, but seeing it in person was a completely different experience. What really struck me was the way van Gogh captured the feeling of the night. The stars seem to almost pulse with energy, and there's a sense of longing and solitude in the scene. It reminded me of some nights I spent growing up in my small town, lying on the grass and looking at the stars, feeling connected to the universe. The painting made me think about the emotions we often hide. Van Gogh painted this during a difficult time in his life, yet he created something so beautiful despite his struggles. It inspired me to embrace my own challenges and emotions. I think that's why it left such a mark on me - it’s a reminder that art can come from pain, and it can also provide healing. Every time I think about that painting, I feel motivated to express myself and not shy away from my feelings.

Why this answer works

  1. The answer specifically names the artwork and its creator, providing clear context.
  2. It describes a personal experience with the art, making it relatable and engaging.
  3. The emotional impact is discussed in detail, showing deep reflection and personal connection.

What the examiner listens for

Fluency (can you keep going for 2 minutes without long pauses), vocabulary range (topic words, not just "good" and "nice"), and grammar variety (past tenses and linking words like "which is why" and "even though"). Hesitation is normal; stopping is what costs bands. If you lose your thread, say "what I mean is..." and keep moving.
