Tutorial: Designing a Student Survey
10 questions, about 9 minutes, marked the moment you submit with the right answer beside every question you missed. The recording plays once, the way the real test plays it.
What you will hear
A talk of a few minutes with specific facts: names, numbers, prices and times. The transcript unlocks after marking, so you can find the exact words that cost you.
The questions
- What is the students' project about? (How students travel to campus / Student spending / Library use / Campus accommodation)
- Why does the tutor think thirty questions is too many? (Students dislike questionnaires / People stop answering after about five minutes / It is hard to analyse / The university limits the number)
- What does the tutor say about asking questions about the weather? (It is a bad idea / The report must say when the survey was done / It should be done in summer only / It should be removed)
- What is the problem with sharing the survey on social media? (It is expensive / The sample may not represent the university / It breaks university rules / Too many people may reply)
- What is the problem with asking people outside the library? (It is too cold / Only library users would be asked / The library forbids it / It takes too long)
- What does the tutor recommend instead? (Telephoning students / Handing out the questionnaire at the end of lectures in different departments / Using the university email list / Asking staff to complete it)
- What sample size does the tutor consider realistic? (About fifty / About one hundred and fifty / About two hundred and fifty / About five hundred)
- What does the tutor suggest about the open questions? (Keep all three / Keep one and change the others / Remove them all / Make them longer)
- How should the students test the questionnaire? (Give it to five friends and watch them / Post it online first / Ask the tutor to answer it / Time themselves answering it)
- When is the proposal due? (The fourth of November / The seventh of November / The fourteenth of November / The twenty-first of November)
